This weekend is what we, on WFO Radio call, “The Greatest Weekend in Racing”. While there are other great racing weekends, including Daytona 500 weekend, the sheer volume of extremely prestigious events, makes this one stand out above the rest. In the United States, it is also Memorial Day Weekend. Memorial Day, is a solemn holiday, where Americans reflect on those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I like to believe that most Americans take some time between shopping for mattresses and lawn furniture at Memorial Day sales, and igniting the BBQ, to give this some thought. This wonderful American lifestyle that we all enjoy is not free, it costs something. And some have paid the ultimate price.
Racing fans are typically very patriotic, and that patriotism is always evident in the pre-race ceremonies at each of the major motorsports events here in the United States. (Soon, we will have an American team to root for in the F1, Grand Prix of Monaco.) The Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600 go all out with music and tributes to the men and women in the United States military, as I’m sure the NHRA will, as they return to racing on “The Greatest Weekend in Racing”. This patriotism, and love for our great Nation, combined with the serious nature of Memorial Day, the thunder of thousands of horsepower, racing at speeds over 200 mph, and even 300 mph, make for a special, emotional experience for the fans in attendance, and the millions more watching on television. America. Memorial Day. Racing. They simply go together.
So, instead of spending my column pontificating about who is going win each of these races (listen to WFO Ignition or Tailgate Picks to hear that), I am going to go back a few weeks to one the best experiences I’ve had in my life; my visit to The United States Marine Corps. Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina.
